The Departure Lounge is where we dared to dream.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Beyond the Departure Lounge is where
those dreams become reality.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

Where It All Began
<\/h2>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

It\u2019s hard to say where it all began really.

But if I had to hazard a guess, I\u2019d say it was the bar.

That's where most of our dreaming started.

It hadn\u2019t always been a bar.

For most of its life, it was simply the room.
And the room seemed to have a life of its own.

It started as a garden sun lounge, later became a play area, and at one point became the place where things ended up when we weren\u2019t quite sure where else to put them.

Whatever we needed at the time, the room would adapt \u2014 sometimes before we even realised we needed it to change.
Somehow, it always seemed to be one step ahead of us.

As the years passed, the room seemed to grow up alongside us.

Eventually, the grandkids no longer needed the play area. Life had moved on, and somehow the room had too.

The room had grown up too.
By then, it was over 20 years old.
It was time for it to become our bar.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

The bar gave us somewhere to sit with a drink, look out through those bifold doors and talk.
About holidays. Places we'd been. Places we'd still like to see. Things we might do one day.
And increasingly, we talked about the future.
Somewhere amongst those conversations, our bar became, The Departure Lounge.
At first, it was just a name. A bit of fun.
But gradually the conversations changed.
\u201cWouldn't it be nice...\u201d became \u201cCould we?\"
\u201cCould we?\u201d became \u201cWhy couldn't we?\u201d
And without really noticing when it happened, The Departure Lounge stopped being simply the name of our bar.
It became the place where we dared to dream.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

The Emotional Price of a Dream<\/h2>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

Dreams are easy when they're just conversations.
Making them real is different.
For all the excitement about what lay ahead, there was something we couldn't ignore.
To gain the life we were dreaming about, we first had to let go of the life we'd already built.<\/strong>

And that life wasn't something we wanted to escape from.
Quite the opposite.
We loved our home. It had looked after us and our family for years.
It was full of memories, familiar corners and all those ordinary things you barely notice while you're living them.
That was perhaps the hardest part to explain.
We weren't leaving because we were unhappy.<\/strong>
We were leaving because we wanted to see what else life might still have waiting for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t\"House\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

And that was the strange part.
The closer the dream came to becoming real, the more we began to understand what it was actually going to cost us.
Not financially.
We were about to leave the place where so much of our life had happened.
Birthdays. Christmases. Family gatherings. Children growing up and grandchildren arriving.
None of those memories were disappearing.
But the place that held so many of them would no longer be ours.
And slowly, as the plans became real, we started doing something we'd talked about for years but had never actually had to face.
We started saying goodbye.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

The House Begins to Say Goodbye<\/h2>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

It didn't happen all at once.
At first, it was just little things.
A cupboard that had always been full was suddenly half empty.
A drawer was cleared.
Boxes appeared in corners of rooms.
Things we'd walked past every day for years began to disappear.
Nothing dramatic had happened.
And yet, little by little, the house was beginning to feel different.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t\"\"\/\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

The changes were small at first.
But once you started noticing them, they seemed to be everywhere.
A room would lose a piece of furniture.
A cupboard we'd opened without thinking for years was suddenly empty.
Pictures came down. Shelves were cleared. Things were packed away.
And with every box that left, the house seemed to become a little quieter.
It was still our home.
We were still living there.
But for the first time, we could see it beginning to let us go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t\"\"\/\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

At first, clearing the house had felt like a job that simply needed doing.
Keep this. Pack that. Give this away. Take that to the motorhome.
But every now and then, something would stop us.
An old photograph. Something the grandchildren had left behind. Something tucked away in a cupboard that hadn't seen daylight for years.
Things that probably meant nothing to anybody else.

But they meant something to us.<\/strong>

And that was when we began to understand the real price of the dream.
It wasn't the things we were giving away.

It was everything those things reminded us of.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

The strange thing was, the emptier the house became, the more we seemed to notice it.
Rooms we'd walked through thousands of times suddenly looked different.
Marks on walls. Familiar corners. The places where furniture had stood for years.
Without all the things filling the rooms, somehow we began to see the house itself again.
And amongst all the clearing and packing, something else was happening too.

The house was beginning to say its own goodbyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

There were moments when we'd stop and look around and remember how different the house had once been.
Not the decorating or the furniture.
Our life in it.<\/strong>
Children growing up. Grandchildren arriving. Birthdays. Christmases. Ordinary Sunday afternoons that nobody thought to photograph.
At the time, they were simply life.
We didn't know we were making memories.
We were just living them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t\"\"\/\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

And perhaps that was what made clearing the house so strange.
We weren't just emptying rooms.
We were standing in the same places where all of that life had happened.
The furniture could go. The cupboards could be emptied. The pictures could come down.
But none of it took the memories with it.
Those were coming with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

As the days passed, there was less and less of us left in the house.
Rooms emptied. Cupboards stood open. Familiar corners looked unfamiliar.
The things that had made the house feel like ours were slowly disappearing into boxes, bags and the back of a van.
Yet somehow, the house didn't feel sad.
It just felt different.
As though it knew what was happening before we were quite ready to admit it.
Our home was slowly becoming a house again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t\"\"\/\t\t\n<\/div>\n
\n \t\t\t

The strange thing was, we were still there.
We still came through the front door.
We still made cups of tea in the kitchen.
We still went to bed there at night.
But each day there was a little less of us in the house.
More boxes left. More cupboards emptied. Another room changed.
And slowly, something we had known for years began to feel different.
We hadn't left yet.<\/strong>
But already, the house was beginning to feel less like our home.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

The house was still ours.
But more and more of our life was already packed away.
Every bag that left, every box that was packed, seemed to take another small piece of us with it.
And yet, the things that really mattered weren't being left behind.
They were coming with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

\n \t\t\t

As the house emptied, we began to see just how much it had given us.
It had sheltered us.
It had watched our family grow.
It had been there for the birthdays, the Christmases and all the ordinary days in between.
It had done its job perfectly.
And before we left, there was really only one thing left to say.

Thank you.<\/strong>

For looking after us.
For watching our family grow.
For all the memories we made without knowing, at the time, just how much they would one day mean.
For being the place we came back to.
The place our children came back to.
The place our grandchildren knew as Nana and Grandad's.

Thank you for being our home.<\/strong>

Somewhere between the gratitude and goodbyes\u2026<\/h2>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Our home quietly became a house again.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n

Not because the love had gone.
But because it was time for another family to make it their home.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n
